Windows 8 CP + View 5.0 with PCoIP + iPad [video]

· 1 min read

I dedicated part of my Saturday to get Windows 8 Customer Preview running on ESXi5 with VMware View 5.0 and PCoIP. VMware View 5 doesn’t support Windows 8 CP out-of-the-box, and I had to do some modifications to get that working.

Luckily, all PCoIP bits work with Windows 8 natively and no changes to drivers or PCoIP server were necessary.

Finally, after getting the solution to work flawlessly I decided to test the VMware View iPad app with Windows 8 CP in a PCoIP session. Again everything worked fine; however Windows 8 introduces some new gestures designed specifically for tablets and multi-touch displays that are currently missing on the VMware View iPad app. You will see in the video below how I struggle sometimes to get to certain menus. I am certain that the VMware View team will quickly add the required gesturing or quick-access buttons to the iPad app.

As for getting Windows 8 CP running with VMware View 5 I will soon publish a blog post with a step-by-step tutorial.

For now, watch the Windows 8 CP + View 5.0 + PCoIP +  iPad session…

I have been toying around with this myself for a short while. I was able to get a Windows8 VM created, and get it added to a manual dedicated pool in view, but the view agent does not want to connect for some reason. It stays in the status of "waiting for agent" in the view admin console. Did you run into this same issue?

Daniel

Hi!

I am glad you solved the problem. Can't wait to read your tutorial!

@Nazarah: I've got the same problem with the agent.

Hello!

Same problem. :(

I'll provide a little more detail on what I'm doing and my environment as well, maybe it will help.

I am attempting to load the 64 bit version with view 5, running on an ESXi 5.0 host. We do have a GPO in place that impliments settings for use of an internet proxy.

Today, I will be testing with the 32 bit version and different proxy settings to see if I can't make something work.
