Datrium in on a roll, increasing momentum and awareness with customers, analysts, and partner community. Launching a new technology that disrupts an established market is never easy and required major efforts from a marketing perspective. So, I recently witnessed a Twitter discussion about how the HCI definition is changing and how Datrium is one of those newcomers blurring the lines in this nascent market. Purists tend to like to stick to strict definitions of what HCI means, while the rebels tend to embrace newer concepts a little easier. The discussion is long and goes in multiple directions and branches, but here is a good thread.

Another VMworld is upon us, and I couldn’t be more excited about attending the conference with Datrium. Datrium technology excites me as much as Hyperconvergence did five years ago, and VDI did ten years ago ...and Datrium is going big time for this VMworld.

I should be on leave this week in preparation for the marathon during next two weeks, but I am not. I am rather working furiously on a number of different Nutanix partnerships and announcements. BTW - Big Nutanix announcement coming sometime next week. Next week is also the Nutanix SKO 'Sales KickOff' and this time it's happening in Vegas at they ARIA. I hope I get some recovery time over the next weekend because right after Nutanix SKO is that time again, VMworld. As always VMworld will happen as if it was a blur... so many conversations, interactions, sessions and parties. It's always nice to see friends and colleagues that otherwise I would only communicate via twitter and email.

During VMworld 2013, Ravi Kumar and I presented a session entitled "What's New and What's Next for Horizon View". In this session we discussed few aspects about what users and administrators should expect from Horizon View in the future.

In this session I took brief time to diagram and explain each of Horizon View components from a modularity perspective and how we are moving to a more decoupled architecture. Below you will find a short excerpt of this presentation that discuss few of the challenges and opportunities for Horizon View and the Software Defined Datacenter moving forward.

For those of you coming to my VMworld sessions I have couple updates. Firstly, for those coming to the EUC5145 – Enterprise Mobility Management: What is It We Need to Manage? panel , I regret to inform I will not be able to attend this panel due overlapping commitments. In my place you now have VMware's EUC CTO Scott Davis who kindly agreed to replace me for this panel with VMware Sr. Director Mobile Work Solutions, Srinivas Krishnamurti and blogger Jack Madden.

The VMworld 2013 Content Catalog is out now and speakers are starting to gear up for the conference, preparing their decks, demos and rehearsing their talks.

One thing that not many know is that VMware is offering a special speaker’s training for Non-VMware employees with selected sessions. So, as always, I expect sessions to have an even higher bar in terms of stage presence and presentation engagement.

This year I decided submit only co-hosted sessions with people who are specialist in their product areas. People like Mac Binesh, Director for Horizon Performance; John Dodge, Tech Marketing DIrector; and Narasimha Krishnakumar, Horizon View Product Manager.

There are so many disruptive VMware technologies in the VDI space that sometimes is hard to keep up with them all. I am looking forward to few of them, such as the VMware Distributed Storage and Space-Efficient Sparse Virtual Disks.

At same pace the storage industry is being transformed and now most storage solutions on the market are leveraging the performance of flash memory in it’s many form factors. Some vendors have Solid State Drives, other PCIe card devices, and other vendors utilize the PCIe cards in their scale-out solutions – but at the end of the day they are all using flash memory.

In today's market we are seeing a clear change in storage architectures and the drivers for change are new technologies such as SSD/Flash and new applications, which have different requirements from the storage subsystem. I finally completed bookings and arrangements for VMworld and I thought would be nice to share my schedule here. I honestly don’t expect to be able to attend all listed sessions but I’ll do my best.

One thing that I regret is not have signed up to sessions a while back. Some of the sessions I really would like to attend were Full already and I had to select alternative sessions. However, keep eyes on the schedule as VMware may open new sessions.

Jason Langone and I have designed a session for VMWorld 2011 to cater for those VDI technical Jedi and Ninjas that are interested in some real-life large deployment (technical) design information. We are not planning to cover the basics about how VMware View components work. We will provide you with some in-depth understanding about how to design real-life VDI solutions with what I call the Core Factors in mind, they are: high availability, disaster proven, active/active and active/passive datacenters, bandwidth boundaries, etc…
