As most of you probably know Microsoft does not provide SPLA licensing model (Service Provider Level Agreement) for Windows desktop operating systems (Windows 7, 8 and 8.1) to allow enterprise customers and service providers to create Desktop-as-a-Service offerings using enterprise grade VDI solutions such as Horizon View. However, Windows Server 2008 does provide SPLA licensing model enabling alignment with Microsoft licensing terms.

New vCenter Operations Manager for Horizon View (V4V) Tech and Video

During VMworld Barcelona 2013 VMware announced the bundling of vCenter Operations Manager with the Horizon View Suite, at no additional cost. In my opinion this awesome given that vCOps has helped me to troubleshoot View deployments numerous times.

vCOPS offers performance and operations management for deployments of any size, production monitoring, advanced problem warning, faster time to resolution and complete infrastructure coverage. The new vCOPS 5.8, also announced during VMworld, uses intelligent operations with policy-based automation, where the automation engine is self-learning and regulates and drives remediation actions continuously.

New VMware vCOps for Horizon View 1.5 Architecture DeepDive

VMware recently published an article describing the new functions and features on VMware vCenter Operations Manager for Horizon View 1.5. Here is the original article, but in summary:

Easier Installation

Greater Scalability

Previous versions of vC Ops for View were limited to a single environment of no more than about 3,000 desktops. To monitor more desktops, you had only two choices. You could monitor a subset (pool level generally) of the virtual desktop machines, or you could install an additional instance of vC Ops for View. This was limiting because multiple vC Ops for View monitoring environments were fragmented and did not provide a “single pane of glass” for monitoring, management, and control.

Large View Deployment with vCenter Operations Manager PlugIn

During EMC World 2012 the Hands-On Labs about 20,000 VMs were created and destroyed. Each Hands-On Lab is an individual vCloud VApp instantiated on-demand and it contains the essential VMs for the Hands-On Lab. Additionally, each Hands-On Lab has a Windows 7 VM with View Agent that is manually added to a VMware View deployment to allow desktop brokering and PCoIP access.

Unofficial VMware View PCoIP Adapter for VCOps [Video]

Not long ago I published an article entitled the Unofficial VMware View PCoIP Adapter for VCOps. This VMware View adapter provides PCoIP metrics from any VMware View environment and load them up onto vCenter Operations. If you have not had a chance to implement and play with the solution, watch the short demo below.

Unofficial VMware View PCoIP Adapter for VCOps

VMware View adapter for vCenter Operations is close to GA date. That’s is fantastic; and it will give VMware View administrators the long waited insight on what’s happening with the virtual desktops and virtual desktop infrastructure.

VMware View adapter will provide several metrics. However, the adapter utilize WMI calls available in VMware View 5.0 to post PCoIP data to VCOps. Like many of my customers, you may not be in a position to upgrade to View 5.0, but still want to get the PCoIP statistics in real time. Optionally, you may want to feed different data management system such as Splunk.
