During VMworld US I has the opportunity to chat in Portuguese with Valdecir Carvalho (@homelaber) from homelaber.com.br. Valdecir has been doing a great job with the VMUG in Sao Paulo, Brazil and was curious about the Open Convergence innovation that Datrium is bringing to the market and in what ways OCI differs from HCI. I had a blast and hard time giving an interview in Portuguese, but the outcome was excellent. Valdecir, thanks for the opportunity to talk to your readers.

It is not often that an opportunity to join a cutting edge technology company appears to us in a lifetime and I have done it twice now - I consider myself very lucky.

Firstly, the team at Datrium formed part of the founding teams for Data Domain and VMware. Data Domain revolutionized the enterprise storage industry by introducing deduplication technology, and VMware does not need introductions. Diane Greene and Mendel Rosenblum, VMware founders, are early funders at Datrium, and some of the top Valley VCs like Lightspeed and NEA (Nutanix, Riverbed, Nest, Uber, Workday, etc…) are also investors.

Alexa Skill for Nutanix goes Open-Source

As you may be aware, I have been building the Alexa Skill for Nutanix during my spare time over the last couple months. If not, check this out.

I am glad to say that we are open-sourcing the code and schematics that runs on AWS infrastructure under Apache 2.0 license, and also providing examples of how to implement the solution. The source code is available on Nutanix GitHub repository here.

Diversifying into a new role can be seriously challenging from a learning and comfort perspective…. Let’s face it, we all have a comfort factor depth of specialized knowledge we attain in a field of expertise and it’s comfortable and natural to work within this.

VDI Calculator is now Open-Source and Available on GitHub

What a phenomenal journey this VDI calculator has been through. The VDI Calculator is today in its 7th major release and dozens of features have been added to the application over the years.

It all started as an Excel spreadsheet in 2010 and later on evolving into a Flash based app and later into a Java app. Since June 2013 when I implemented access counters using GoogleAnalytics this calculator has been used over 60,000 times with United Stated and UK leading the pack.

In March of 1996 myself and two friends left the land of Brazil, en-route to an adventure that would change our lives forever. As teenagers, my buddies and I had spent the previous year planning an intrepid ‘roughcut’ journey, destination Middle East. All plans were well organised and set. Fate took a hand however and a last minute change resulted in the three of us arriving in Australia. With little planning, we were armed with backpacks and about $1,000 cash in our pockets. We wondered if it would be enough for our one year adventure the had been dreaming of for so long?

Today Nutanix announced the first part of a multi-month announcement for NOS 4.1. This release is mostly focused on enhancements for the areas of resiliency, security, disaster recovery, analytics, supportability and management. However, even being a ‘dot’ release, NOS 4.1 delivers very important features, and in my option this version has enough meat to actually even be considered a major release.

I should be on leave this week in preparation for the marathon during next two weeks, but I am not. I am rather working furiously on a number of different Nutanix partnerships and announcements. BTW - Big Nutanix announcement coming sometime next week. Next week is also the Nutanix SKO 'Sales KickOff' and this time it's happening in Vegas at they ARIA. I hope I get some recovery time over the next weekend because right after Nutanix SKO is that time again, VMworld. As always VMworld will happen as if it was a blur... so many conversations, interactions, sessions and parties. It's always nice to see friends and colleagues that otherwise I would only communicate via twitter and email.

I’m happy to announce the next step in my professional career as I start a new and exciting chapter. Starting next week I will be joining the start-up Nutanix as their Technical Alliances Director.

I’ve enjoyed over 4 years with the EMC/VMware family in different roles. My most recent as a View Architect in the VMware End-User Computing CTO Office. In all roles I had the opportunity to work with great leaders and amazing innovative and talented engineers.

The VMworld Public Session Voting is now Open to anyone and allows VMware to poll the general public on which sessions they want to see presented at the event.

This year I decided submit only co-hosted sessions with people who are specialist in their product areas. People like Mac Binesh, Director for Horizon Performance; John Dodge, Tech Marketing DIrector; and Narasimha Krishnakumar, Horizon View Product Manager.
