How to give Win Server 2K8 R2 a Win7 Look & Feel in VMware View

I was looking how to customize the Windows 2K8 Server R2 that I am accessing via PCoIP and VMware View to give the Windows 7 look and feel.

Read my article. How to Access Windows 2K8 Server via PCoIP with VMware View.

I found an excellent resource that I would like to share here. The blog is and blogger explains step-by-step how to get Win2K8 to look and feel exactly like Windows 7.

The most important posts that would benefit VDI implementations I am listing below:

  • Themes
  • Sidebar
  • Aero-Cursors
  • Thumbnails in Windows Explorer
  • Boot Screen
  • Logon Screen
  • Games Explorer and gameux.dll
  • MS DirectMusic Core Services

another option is to use the Citrix Service Provider Automation Pack or pull out the App Delivery Setup Tools from a XenApp 6.5 eval. They give you GPO’s to lockdown and publish a Server 2008 R2 desktop with Win7 look and feel. I know it feels wierd to do if you are using VMware. At least check it out as a basis for your customizations.

I did a session on this at BriForum 2011
