Understanding Horizon View Flash URL Redirection

VMware just announced a new Horizon View feature called Flash URL Redirection that enables users to stream live Flash video optimally through VDI sessions (find the release notes here). When using the Flash redirection the URL is redirected to the client endpoint when a user clicks on a live webcast URL link.

When using Flash URL Redirection the live media stream is sent from the media server directly to the client endpoints, bypassing datacenter servers where VDI sessions are hosted. This method allows IT to effectively eliminate redundant video streams to a large-scale audience by leveraging multicast video technology.

I am not going to repeat my colleagues and their posts on VMware EUC Blog, so here are the highlights of this new functionality in Horizon View:

  • Flash URL Redirection enables the interception and redirection of Flash Video sourced from Adobe Media Server
  • The media administrator must manually embed a JavaScript command in the MIME (MHTML) web page. Find more information on the VMware Horizon View Feature Pack Installation and Administration guide.
  • In this first release, the Flash Player on the client endpoint is not seamlessly integrated into Horizon View Desktop session.
