VMware View VDI Flash Calculator v2.8 Released

I have just uploaded a new release of the online VMware View VDI Flash Calculator supporting new VMware View 5.1 features. View 5.1 is not available for download just yet, however many VMware partners and customers are already designing and sizing their VDI infrastructures with View 5.1 in mind. For this reason I am publishing this release of the calculator a little bit before View 5.1 goes public (GA).

The VDI calculator can be found at http://myvirtualcloud.net/?page_id=1076. Alternatively, go to my blog homepage and select VDI Calculator on the top bar.

Release 2.8

– Added VMware View 5.1 support
– Added support for VMware View CBRC System Disk (Content Based Read Cache) *
– Added support for NFS Linked Clone vSphere clusters with more than 8 hosts
– Added support for scale up architectures with high density servers
– Added support for 2560×1600 display resolution
– Small UI changes

Note:

The CBRC implementation uses algorithm based on an average maximum of 65% IO reduction in accordance to VMware performance numbers. (*) This release of the VDI calculator only address the IO reduction for Linked Clone Replica disks (system disk).

Persistent disks can also be cached by CBRC, however the benefits are not as latent as with Replica disks and additional tests will be required before I am able to support mathematical and statistical calculations. I am expecting to have that done in the next few weeks.

Check out the VDI calculator training video. You can find the video at http://myvirtualcloud.net/?p=2551 (not updated for release 2.7)

I have also updated the manual to help you to better use the VDI Flash Calculator. The manual can be found at http://myvirtualcloud.net/?p=1927.
