VMware has come a long way since it’s foundation in 1998. In 1999 VMware Workstation was released and since then the company has been growing exponentially. In 2003 VMware was acquired by EMC Corporation for $625 million (today’s VMW Mkt Cap is $33.48 billion) and after that the company has been acquiring other companies with key technologies to complement their suite of products. Some acquisitions reflected on direct product launch whilst some others were or will be smoothly integrated into existing products. Yes, I am a VMware employee but I think it’s interesting to see what makes VMware the awesome company we are today.
Akimbi Systems was a private held company and it’s technology was incorporated into what later became the vCenter Lab Manager.
Dunes had developed a powerful orchestration platform that allowed automation of the entire virtual machine lifecycle from requisition to de-commissioning. The acquisition complemented the existing VMware management and automation solutions such as VMware Orchestrator and Lifecycle Manager.
B-hive had a unique solution that gave infrastructure groups visibility into application performance in virtual environments such as end-user transaction response time, virtual machine utilization and cross-virtual machine dependencies. The technology was renamed as VMware AppSpeed.
Tungsten Graphics technology improved VMware’s ability to deliver 3D graphics virtualization capabilities. I could not find much information but I believe the technology ended up as part of VMware Tools drivers set.
Thinstall core product was renamed to ThinApp and is today one of the leader products in application packaging. ThinApp is a key component of VMware’s VDI solution.
SpringSource was acquired for approximately $362 million. The most popular and fastest growing open source developer communities, application frameworks, runtimes, and management tools will power VMware’s Cloud initiatives; and has now been branded as vFabric.
Integrien’s real-time performance analytics solution simplify the complexity of managing application and infrastructure performance by transforming data from existing management tools into actionable intelligence. The technology will be combined with VMware vCenter to enable higher levels of automation for the Cloud.
TriCipher technology will allow VMware to extend the security and control of private clouds to Public Clouds adding authentication and identity management.
RTO Software created a product called Virtual Profiles that handles access to a user’s personal data files, settings, and application access in virtualized Windows desktop environments. The acquisition is key for VMware’s End-user computing initiatives.
EMC Ionix will provide new capabilities to VMware’s vCenter family. The products acquired were Server Configuration Manager (formerly Configuresoft), FastScale, Application Discovery Manager (formerly nLayers), and Service Manager (formerly Infra).
Zimbra acquisition from Yahoo! demonstrate how much VMware wants to be the thought leader in Cloud solutions. A great example of the type of scalable ‘cloud era’ solution that can span smaller, on-premise implementations to the cloud.
Gemstone was acquired to part of SpringSource. The company develop a distributed data management tool that will integrate into the SpringSource portfolio.
Have I missed any acquisitions?
Looking at VMware’s acquisitions it is clear that Infrastructure Management and Cloud/SAS cornerstones are very important for the organisation. Equally important is desktop virtualisation and without any internal side-track I would expect some additional investments in this area. Are there more acquisitions to come? Place your bets now.
