You don't see any security issues with "WinRM to Use HTTP"?

Xangati requires you to Enable unencrypted traffic to allow HTTP access.
winrm set winrm/config/service @{AllowUnencrypted="true"}

They say "Despite using HTTP as the protocol, Xangati software uses a secure authentication scheme (Kerberos) for logging into the server. This means that the user's
credentials are not sent in the clear."

Thoughts?

Great write up. You mention running the appliance with protection by FT. Is that a supported configuration? I am exploring the option using of atlantis in combination with full clones. Do you have any data on this or have you seen any that you could share? I'm interested in knowing what the space savings would be, how much it speeds up deployment and what the reduction of peak IO is. Thank you!

Thanks for sharing the solution. You also could run the Linux OS in Unity Mode and publish the application in use only. That should work as a treat in your case.

I don't know if the demand is that big right now but sure to grow. I think if you could get Apple to allow this there would be a huge demand.

Would be nice if VMware was working on these while trying to garner support and demand.

Hi Andre

Great series of articles

Given your extensive knowledge of the product (which has just GAed!!) and the immense amount of new features - could I encourage you to write one of your informative blog posts highlighting in one place all the gotchas you see emerging with people trying to deploy 5.1 - already in the comment string above two such gotchas are mentioned - i.e VCAI and dedicated replica datastores - such a blog post of gotchas would then become a very useful View 5.1 Architecture and Deployment aid checklist - helping people shape deployments that will actually work in reality

Many thanks

When using Linked Clones any applications of editions to the guest OS will be placed into the delta disk. You may use persistent disks to store user related data, such as profile, documents etc.

<a href="#comment-69581" rel="nofollow">@JD </a>
VCAI is not supported if you are using dedicated Replica Datastore. The reason being is that VCAI allows for array management of the virtual desktops and deltas via VAAI. The Storage Tiering is a VMware View management feature. They don't work together.

To use VCA Dedicated Replica Datastores must be disabled.

Good day!

This actually works well. We used a similar setup with XP and Player for a custom app in Linux used by the US Army. Folks would log in to a thick XP client, then log in to an XP View desktop, which automatically ran Player and the Linux app in full screen mode. This was a training environment, but the desktops and app worked just fine. As you note, your physical hardware needs to support it, but it's certainly do-able when one must implement it.

Cheers!

A person could also use XRDP to access Linux desktops accessed through the Windows RDP client. In that case, you'd get a Linux desktop in an RDP session while sitting at your Windows computer. The Linux sessions would come from a single Linux box (or VM for that matter) which would act like a Terminal Services box serving up multiple XRDP Linux desktops.

I use CentOS as the Linux flavor -- haven't tried other flavors.

I used an RPM (download the matching RPM version to the Linux type and version) to do the install:

http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=xrdp

Sure would be nicer if VMware would just set up a fling or similar to get Linux desktops coming directly but XRDP has worked fine for me for now.

In that case, you’d get a Linux desktop in an RDP session while sitting at your Windows computer. The Linux sessions would come from a single Linux box (or VM for that matter) which would act like a Terminal Services box serving up multiple XRDP Linux desktops.

Thanks Andre,
Where do the following go:
- Application update. E.g. FireFox update. Assume we're not using ThinApp :-)
- AV update. e.g. TrendMicro OfficeScan update. Assume we're not using DeepSecurity.

Besides Windows updates, what kind of files go to Delta Disk?

Thanks from Singapore

I third the View 5 (or 5.1) bandwidth update.

In my testing, I am seeing general Office-type use (answering emails, mucking around in Word and Excel, light web-browsing) that 50 to 90 kbps is a nice average number. So, I just selected "Custom" for User Profile and used a range of values between 50 and 90 to get an idea of what to expect.

I don't have scoop into what the tech marketing team has created from a documentation perspective. However, I believe they will release the documentation for View 5.1 when the product is GA.

Yes, View Storage Accelerator will also work if replicas are stored on SSD. However, bare in mind that CBRC does not use SSD for caching, only RAM.

This is a really cool app. I have a question though, and a little background is in order. I installed the app on a test server and copies some log files into the log folder. Cool, the data shows up and I'm able to view the graphs. Next, I deploy some universal forwarders on virtual desktops and tell it to forward the pcoip_server*.txt files to the pcoip index in the vmware_pcoip sourcetype. Well, the data is not showing up since I created the pcoip index and the app is only looking at the main index. How do I change the default index for the app, so that the data from my desktops shows up?

<a href="#comment-68236" rel="nofollow">@Mark McDonald </a>
I'm sorry to disappoint but I have not had the required spare cycles to work on this. However, for Windows 2K8 desktops you should be able to use the native Windows Roaming Profile.

Hi Andre,

Any progress with the article on linked clones and persona management that you mentioned? I'm in the same boat as Merrill and would like to be able to deploy Win 2k8 desktops in this manner.

Thanks,

Mark
